Review: Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (Will you Cross the Clouds & Come)..title is just apt for the movie & i must mention this after a long long time a movie typically reminds the Old Mani Ratnam or K Balachandran's style of film making...The charecters are just charecters...they are protrayed real, emote exuberance & emotions when ever required..not Caricatures...Full credit goes to the Director Gautam Vasudev Menon who earlier gave us blockbuster movies like Minnale, Kaakha Kaakha , Vettaiyaadi Vilayaadu & Vaaranam Aayiram. This time he has gone ahead & raised the bar in the art of film making.

The story starts off with the protagonist Karthik (Silambarasan) describing himself on Education, his background, his friends & his ambition in life....One mention here it's really nice to see Simbu aka Silambarasan being a matured guy & not enacting his usual overdone style actions or that done to death punch dialogues which are rhyming for no rhyme or reason....it's a treat to watch him play a guy who is madly in love with a girl & will continue to love her...Enters Jessie (Trisha)..saree clad through out it's again a treat to watch her in the complete movie playing a cultured christian lady..yet showing sparks of an urban girl who wants to show that she does not believe in love..slowly the love between the two matures...this is where the director's touch comes in..the way he has portrayed the love especially the hero confessing the love first & then travelling all the way to Kerala (Allapuzha) to say sorry & then convincing her to become friend with him...aah this is sheer class...From here on how our man convinces her for falling in love & then later on discovering how gutsy his girl is shown in clean flow & not a moment will you have a dull moment in the movie..though some might feel the movie is slow paced & is dragging but dwell deep into the story you will never find a dull moment...

There are lot of intricate dialogues in the movie which actually describes the way life needs to be taken & how life must move on irrespective of what happens in one's life..For instance hero comes out of church where in Jessie had just called off the wedding & says life must go on then the cross roads come..this typically reminds of KB's school of film making..the director has shown to take courage & move with the wind when in dilema is what he wants to say.. the way the director has told the story & the way the film's ending has been given is top class..Climax of the movie is something that you will find yourself stumped..You would have guessed the obvious but the U turn comes in the end...I don't want to tell you the climax which actually spoils the eager movie goers for this one...Go watch it & feel for your loved ones...Truly top notch...

Music is always a highlight of Gautam Menon's movies..His earlier hits were all delivered by Harris Jayaraj..This time Gautam Menon opted to team with A.R.Rahman & expectations were sky high right from day one but Rahman has surely not dissappointed & it can be seen in his compositions for the movie. A.R.Rahman's music is really cool & classy..though i personally felt couple of songs could have been edited..but the pick of the songs are Hosanna rendered by Vijay Prakash & Aaromale sung by Alphonse.which has multi layers of strings & chorus singing the tune. & best part of this song is the true blend mix of Tamil & Malayalam renderings in the song..great stuff from Mozart of Madras....Rahman returns to Tamil Movie roughly after one and a half years & all the songs are simply thunderous..

The Background score too is apt for the scenes & the Rap song of Jessie which is mindblowing..guys this movie is to be seen in theater & not on roadside DVD's.

Hats to Gautam Vasudev Menon who has given us a truly different movie..He really meant it.."A Different Love Story...Again"...not all love stories are different..this is truly a different one..

Cheers,
Ramanujam
